In the immense world of gaming, very few titles have captured the imagination to the extent of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding. The original game was created for PS4 and marked a bold departure from Kojima’s previous games. This previous games from the Metal Gear Solid series were focused on tactical espionage and third person shooting which made them instant classics. There was an option in these games not to kill and use tranquilizers for almost every opponent which made the games unbelievably unique and challenging for gamers. Death Stranding expanded on this idea and made it necessary to use non-lethal weaponry to win the game. This open world game which could be played single player while being online was so different from other titles that it cannot be compared to any other game. Death Stranding 2 is going even further than the previous title and will be a movie and a game combined into one. Kojima has continued to prove he is in a league of his own, but will Death Stranding 2 solidify the new series as a masterpiece? This is the question that we will analyze today.
Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid series, is renowned for his unorthodox style of game development. His commitment to intricate narratives, unconventional gameplay, and cinematic visuals has earned him the right to be called a visionary and an innovator. With the release of the game trailer, it became evident that this is a well thought out game that is pushing boundaries that were already pushed in the previous title. It builds on the previous story of Sam as he traverses the world reconnecting people who have disconnected by tragedy. To be fair, Sam is an IT technician, package deliverer, and warrior all in one. This unique skillset, paired with an epic story sends gamers on a journey that cannot be fully explained; it must be experienced to truly understand. This was a fact in the previous game which had a soundtrack that was second to none and created solely for the game. As players await the release of Death Stranding 2, they can expect the absolute best from Kojima.
The key to Death Stranding's allure is connected to the games mesmerizing visuals, and the sequel promises to continue that legacy. This game is powered by the Decima engine, which is known for displaying realistic landscapes. The Death Stranding world is filled with lush valleys, desolate wastelands, and cities destroyed to oblivion in the wake of worldwide cataclysms that happened in the past. The scenery of the game is not the only amazing factor of the game. The cast is movie and television royalty including Norman Reedus, Troy Baker, and possibly Elle Fanning and Timothy Chalamet. The sets the foundation for a story similar to a modern-day Odessey which will thrill the fans and newcomers to the series.
There are multiple factors which make Death Stranding a next level game and arguably a masterpiece. There are new traversal options in this game that will surprise gamers. The gameplay mechanics are being developed further to make it even more fun. Carrying packages on your back eventually gets old, and new ways of holding packages are necessary. One way to travel that was very fun was the floating carriers that follow Sam as he walks through the world. The possibility of new ways to travel make this exciting and brings innovate gameplay that no other game has at the time. Also, the inclusion of real time weather effects will make this game one of a kind. In the previous game the weather was on of the hardest conditions to deal with, so I can only imagine how challenging this aspect will be for gamers in Death Stranding 2.
At its core, Death Stranding 2 embodies the powerful themes of connection and isolation, which resonate deeply in today's world. Also, the game is heavily focused on the topics of life and death and the fragile balance between the two in life. The game perfectly represents what people have experienced post pandemic, which is a greater level of separation, and the need for technology to help people connect. Sam bridges the gap and helps bring the country back online.
In conclusion, Death Stranding 2 is not just a game; it is a captivating experience that will surpass Kojima’s previous titles. I believe Death Stranding 1 is already a classic and it displayed innovations beyond the entire Metal Gear Solid series. The Metal Gear series has suffered since ever since Kojima’s exit from the company. They are still using his old games and trying to remaster them for the PS5 and other next gen consoles. Death Stranding marks a new era which is already proving to be equally as impressive as previous titles. Gamers should replay the first game from using the director’s cut version and prepare for the next masterpiece from Kojima.
